Dentsply ProTaper Universal Hand Canal Files

ProTaper® nickel-titanium rotary files are designed for treating especially difficult, highly calcified, or curved root canals. Progressive taper and a patented flute design provide flexibility and efficiency for consistent cleaning and shaping.

Shaping files

• SX (Shaping X) files provide coronal enlargement and are used for shaping. On long roots they shape the coronal portion of the canal with their specific flute design.
• Gradually increasing taper along the file length creates more canal space.
• S1 (or F-1 shaping) prepares the coronal canal; S2 (or F-2 shaping) enlarges and prepares the middle third.
• Both instruments are best for preparing the coronal two-thirds of a canal; they do not gradually enlarge the apical third.

Finishing files

• F1, F2, and F3 finishing instruments are designed to finish the apical third; they carefully and gradually enlarge and shape the middle third of the canal.
• Usually only one finishing instrument is needed to prepare the apical third of a single canal, selected according to the canal’s curvature and cross-sectional diameter.
