TheraCal LC — triggers apatite formation

TheraCal LC is a light-cured, resin-modified calcium silicate–filled liner developed for direct and indirect pulp capping and as a protective base under composite, amalgam, cements, and other base materials.

It can be used as an ideal alternative to calcium hydroxide, glass ionomer, RMGI, IRM/ZOE, and other restorative materials (capping and base).

TheraCal LC functions as insulation / barrier and protection for the pulp complex.

TheraCal LC’s patented, special formula consists of tricalcium silicate particles in hydrophilic monomers and provides marked calcium release. Thus TheraCal LC functions as a structure-preserving, durable capping and base material.

Calcium release triggers hydroxyapatite formation and secondary dentin bridge formation. Alkaline pH improves and supports the therapeutic effect and apatite formation. Significant calcium release provides protective coverage. The protective barrier form isolates the pulp. The radiopaque material is easily distinguished on radiographs.

Protective liner: Liquid apatite at your fingertips — protective liner used under restorative materials, cements, or other base materials.

Pulp capping agent: TheraCal LC is indicated on exposed pulp due to caries, mechanical causes, trauma, or similar issues. After bleeding is controlled, it is used directly on the exposed pulp.

Advantages

  • Improved sealing and bonding on moist deep dentin
  • Strong physical properties; zero solubility
  • High radiopacity; significant calcium release
  • Fast and easy to use

Direct capping technique (with assistance from Dr. Mark Cannon)

  1. Stop bleeding before applying TheraCal LC directly on the pulp.
  2. Apply TheraCal LC directly on the exposed pulp using a layering method; when 1 mm thickness is reached, light-cure for 20 seconds.
  3. Apply acid, rinse, and apply bonding.
  4. Continue with the restoration.
  5. Completed restoration.

Indirect pulp capping (with assistance from Dr. Ross Nash)

  1. Remove infected dentin to apply TheraCal LC with a layering technique.
  2. Apply TheraCal LC in layers so each layer does not exceed 1 mm.
  3. Light-cure each layer for 20 seconds.
  4. Etch the enamel around the application area with BISCO Select HV Etch.
  5. Apply BISCO All-Bond SE and light-cure for 10 seconds.
  6. Apply a core material such as BISCO Core-Flo DC and continue finishing.
