Bone graft born from advanced tissue engineering technology
SmartBone®, SmartBone® ORTHO, SmartBone® On Demand™ and SwissBone® are produced by combining natural mineral bone structures with bioresorbable polymers and collagen fragments. This biomaterial combination concept allows the patient’s cells to rapidly and efficiently replace bone as the biopolymers degrade, providing excellent integration and osteogenesis. Thanks to this technology, the graft mimics human bone, is mechanically strong, and resistant to shaping, screws and surgical fixation manoeuvres.
SmartBone®, SmartBone® ORTHO, SmartBone® On Demand™ and SwissBone® are completely the same products, differing only in brand names or intended-use indications.
Bovine bone matrix
It has a chemical structure and morphology similar to human bone. It is hard but not elastic and therefore very brittle (because the mineral matrix loses its biomechanical properties when proteins are lost during cleaning processes).
Bioresorbable polymers
They allow you to have:
- high loading resistance
- high volumetric stability (>95%); polymers protect the bone from early resorption
Collagen fragments
They help to:
- promote adhesion and colonization of blood cells
- guarantee high hydrophilicity and thus enhance the biochemical signalling cascade that supports the osteoinductive process
Human-like microstructure
The microstructure of the SmartBone®, SmartBone® ORTHO, SmartBone® On Demand™ and SwissBone® composite matrix strongly resembles human bone in terms of open, interconnected and medium-sized porosity. It mimics the properties of healthy human bone: high biocompatibility, sufficient open porosity, high mechanical performance, hydrophilicity.
SmartBone®, SmartBone® ORTHO, SmartBone® On Demand™ and SwissBone® are designed to reduce the internal variability that many other bone substitutes have due to their natural origin. IBI offers homogeneous bone substitutes with regular microstructure, porosity, density and mechanical properties.
Extremely high hydrophilicity and rapid osseointegration
Thanks to its microcomposition, SmartBone®, SmartBone® ORTHO, SmartBone® On Demand™ and SwissBone® rapidly reach approx. 38% w/w blood swelling ratio, thereby triggering the chemical signalling cascade that initiates strong osseointegration.
High tissue integration
The microstructure and composition of SmartBone®, SmartBone® ORTHO, SmartBone® On Demand™ and SwissBone® support cell colonization.
In vitro studies
Electron microscopy analyses of in vitro cell colonization tests demonstrated the presence of extensive and well-structured cell formations within SmartBone®, SmartBone® ORTHO, SmartBone® On Demand™ and SwissBone®, confirming the biochemical data collected in vitro during ISO standard tests. Biological and histological research showed how supportive our bone substitutes are as substrates for cell adhesion and growth; mesenchymal stem cells derived from human adipose tissue showed the ability to appropriately colonize the scaffold in vitro and to differentiate once stimulated.
In vivo studies
Studies were performed over a 4-month observation period to evaluate osseointegration. Histological analysis confirmed that integration of SmartBone®, SmartBone® ORTHO, SmartBone® On Demand™ and SwissBone® is validated by natural bone formation over time, including cells and vessels colonizing the pores within.
Dental indications
SmartBone® is intended for use in reconstructive surgery and bone regeneration/augmentation in the following indications:
- Easy, dust-free shaping with any surgical instrument (e.g. bone cutter, drill)
- Resistant to heavy loads and heavy surgical manoeuvres
- Much better stability of extended bone grafts compared with loose granules
- Larger defects do not require autologous bone, thus reducing patient morbidity
- No resorption: the polymeric coating protects the graft during the initial healing/osseointegration period
- Easily absorbs blood
SmartBone® is intended for use in reconstructive surgery and bone regeneration/augmentation in the following indications:
- Regeneration of periodontal bone defects
- Regeneration of extraction sockets
- Regeneration of gaps between the alveolar wall and immediate implants
- Horizontal alveolar ridge augmentation
- Sinus lift floor elevation
- Augmentation of the alveolar ridge in implant sites with adequate residual bone and good blood supply
