A theory that remains valid today is the Gate Control Theory (GCT) developed by Melzack and Wall in 1965. According to this theory, the presence and intensity of pain depend on the passage of neurological stimuli. If the gate is closed, stimuli cannot reach consciousness and pain is not felt.
Pain has central and peripheral components, and pain stimuli are transmitted to the spinal cord via A and C fibers. A fibers are myelinated and transmit stimuli quickly; pain carried by these fibers is perceived as sharp and localized.
