Multi-purpose innovative electrolysis and restoration unit
Since the first electrolysis device developed in 2004 and patented in 2005, the technology has advanced further. The first model could clean deposits from 2000-year-old Roman coins without damaging the base metal. With the new-generation AFE-1794 model, a larger multifunctional “Allround” unit was designed in response to customer requests.
What this modern archaeological cleaning and metal-processing unit can do
- Archaeological restoration: cleaning hardened deposits on metal finds by electrolysis.
- Galvanization: coating metals with different metal layers.
- Anodizing preparation: anodizing aluminum parts before coloring.
- Electrolytic degreasing: fully chemically cleaning parts.
- Titanium coloring: creating decorative colors on titanium surfaces.
Titanium coloring and anodizing (new feature)
The unit is suited to aesthetic and protective coloring of titanium parts. Titanium is colored not with dye as on aluminum, but by light interference.
- How it works: The titanium part is connected to the anode (positive pole). Depending on applied voltage, a very thin transparent oxide layer forms on the metal. Layer thickness determines how light is refracted and produces vivid colors such as gold yellow, purple, blue, pink, or green without paint.
- Precise control: An adjustable joint arm and titanium wire let parts be immersed in the electrolyte bath at the desired angle for even, spot-free color.
- Durability: Full stainless-steel construction supports long service life with the solutions used in titanium anodizing.
Technical details and application advantages
- Protective cleaning: Electrolytic cleaning does not remove base material like abrasive methods (sanding, sandblasting). Original patina and metal structure are preserved.
- Flexible anode distance: Two large stainless-steel anodes supplied with the unit cover the object at a 1:1 ratio. Anode distance can be adjusted manually to optimize current for object size.
- Power supply recommendation: For full performance, a laboratory power supply of at least Max 100 Volt and 20 Amper with voltage and ampere displays is recommended.
- Important note: Before titanium coating, thoroughly degrease and clean the titanium surface.
Caution: This unit is not suitable for continuous long use. After 5-minute uses, rest the unit for 5 minutes.
How to obtain gold yellow
On titanium, colors change in sequence as voltage rises. To reach gold yellow:
- Cleaning is essential: Wash the part thoroughly and remove grease. Even fingerprints can cause uneven color.
- Raise gradually: Start the unit and increase voltage slowly.
- 10–25 Volt: brown and purple tones.
- 30–35 Volt: dark blue begins.
- 45–55 Volt: light blue and turquoise tones.
- 60–75 Volt: the gold yellow range.
- Observe: Immerse the part and bring voltage near 60V. When the yellow tone you want appears (from light yellow toward deep gold), remove the part immediately and rinse in pure water.
